Self rib is a rib harvested from the patient him/herself, donated rib has significant resorption with time, which can be unpredictable, but saves the patient a scar on the chest. Self rib is most ideal in the patient willing to undergo the procedure and who does not have enough cartilage for rhinoplasty in the ear/nose septum, or who has an infection.
